Voted the best diet to follow for several years in a row, the Mediterranean diet is also one the of easiest, most sensible diets to follow.

If you’re new to eating the Mediterranean way, let’s cover a few basics before we get to our list of Mediterranean diet recipes.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

Very simply put the Mediterranean diet is a way of eating based on the traditional foods and eating patterns of the people and countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.

And those of us who grew up in that part of the world, including myself, do not refer to it as a “diet” in that sense of the word.

It is not a restrictive or a structured diet. It is simply a healthy, well-balanced eating pattern that focuses on: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and legumes; lean proteins from fish and poultry; good fats from olive oil; and some dairy.

At it’s core, it is a joyful way of eating that keeps a focus on flavor, sharing, and the pleasure of the table. And you can totally see that by glancing at the list of Mediterranean diet recipes below!

What to Eat on The Mediterranean Diet?

The list of Mediterranean recipes below should give you a great start! But just for simplicity’s sake, here’s a very general summary to help you eat the Mediterranean way:

  • Eat MORE (every day) leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and legumes.
  • Eat MODERATELY (weekly) lean proteins from fish, some poultry, and eggs.
  • Eat LESS (infrequently) Red Meats and Sweets (sweets are often eliminated if you’re following a stricter Mediterranean diet. But for this Mediterranean girl, there is room for the occasional baklava.)
  • Use Extra Virgin olive oil regularly.
  • Avoid processed foods, too much sugar, and any products with a list of ingredients you don’t understand or can’t read very well.

50+ Best Mediterranean Diet recipes

It was hard to select a few of Mediterranean diet recipes, there are many more I love here.

But consider this list of 50+Mediterranean diet recipes a good place to start! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, salads and spreads, soups and sandwiches, and everything in between.

These recipes focus on…

  • Vegetarian and vegan dishes including legumes like beans and lentils (major players)!
  • Pasta and grains (if you’re following the diet very strictly, you can use whole grains and whole wheat pasta in these recipes)
  • Fish, Seafood, and some poultry (but remember that consumption of meats like lamb is also okay on occasion)
  • Extra virgin olive oil as the main cooking fat. You can find the olive oils I use here.
  • Natural flavor makers in the form of fresh herbs, aromatics like garlic and onions, and all-natural and organic spices. Find the spices I use here.

  4. Peter Davies-Clack says:

I have eaten in every country in north Africa and all the other countries in the Medi, except the Levant, so i don’t really class most of your recipes as mediteranean food, such as pasta, olives ,bread cheese, pizzas, canneloni, Lasagna pastitchio.etc. Although i have downloaded your book, you don’t explain what Balela, Shirazi are, and the measurement of a CUP means nothingto me. I use mugs for coffee etc so do not have cups. Nevertheless i shall try some of your recipes. Thank You.

    1. Shanika M says:

Yikes, you are a peace of work. YOU don’t need to class them as anything. Imagine telling someone who actually is of heritage from a Mediterranean country that just because you have eaten in Mediterranean countries, your opinion is somehow superior. Perhaps try going to the store and purchasing measuring utensils. The recipes posted right here basically constitute balela and shirazi. She doesn’t have to specify the name of each. Perhaps in her country (Egypt), these dishes are called something else.

I have not started this diet yet but was told by my doctor that this is the best diet for my case, almost on the pre-diabetic stage. Not yet there but need to start because I am now 61 years old and a widow with 4 children. I will serve this to my family, as well:)!

    1. Suzy says:

Welcome to The Mediterranean Dish, Evelyn! Can’t wait to hear what recipes you try!

    2. Susan R Slayton says:

Evelyn, Look up Dr. Brooke Goldner. With some easy changes, you can turn this around lickety-split! It falls a lot in line with this way of eating.

I was looking at some of your recipes and they look delicious. The only feedback I would give you is on the portion sizes on the recipes, the ones I viewed usually yield between 4-6 servings and there is a button where you can up the portions to 2x or 3x however I wish there was an option to cut the recipe in half as there are just two of us.

    Thank you!

    1. Tracie says:

Love the idea of a decrease button – through the week I cook for myself!

Hi Todd, I also LOVE every single one of Suzy’s recipes… but we are only 2 at home. So I prepare for 6, serve 2 on the same night as planned but I refrigerate the 2 extra meals separately then freeze them the next day! I always have a week worth of home made dinners to choose from. Just make sure to record the date you made the dish and the name of the dish on the containers (I use freezer labels that stay put). As for salades, etc. just divide the ingredients accordingly but NOT the dressing (because it’s harder to do so correctly), Store the ingredients separately ans assemble when you are ready to use them. For the dressings, once mixed, use only what you need and store the rest in the refrigerator (usually good for a few days), don’t forget to get it out beforehand so the oil warms up. Doing that will also save you tones of $$. Enjoy!
